Veterans Day began as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I. After World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was expanded to honor all American veterans and was officially renamed Veterans Day in 1954. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation changing the name, and today the day honors all who have served in the U.S. armed forces, living or deceased.
